Plan an episode rename before touching your collection

A dry-run worksheet for translating absolute anime episode numbers into a season and episode plan.

Published October 15, 2026 · Programming Securely · Original exercise with illustrative examples

Start with the filenames you actually have

Choose a small sample spanning a normal episode, a season boundary, and a special if one exists. Record the source name exactly. An absolute number and an existing SxxExx label describe different numbering schemes, so decide which one you are interpreting before constructing a rule. QMInventory uses inspectable collection rules and a local desktop operation; this worksheet does not scan, upload, copy, or move any media.

Make boundaries and exceptions explicit

Write the first absolute episode and corresponding season/episode for each range you intend to map. Keep specials and ambiguous files in a separate list until you have checked the intended ordering. A continuous number sequence does not establish where a season starts. In a hypothetical collection where absolute episode 14 starts season two, episode 14 maps to S02E01; that example is a chosen rule, not a claim about a particular series.

Inspect destinations before applying a rule

Compare the proposed destination for every sample with the source. Look for two files resolving to the same name, missing extensions, an off-by-one season boundary, or an unintended folder. Start with a copy and keep the source until the destination plays and your media server recognizes it. When sharing a collection rule, review the relative paths included in the mapping. Use the desktop preview to verify the actual rule before a local copy or move.

Worked example

A small situation to try

Illustrative boundary check: a collection has absolute episodes 01–13 assigned to season one and 14–26 to season two. The sample contains 13, 14, and a separately labeled special. Expected outputs are S01E13 and S02E01; the special stays unresolved until its ordering is confirmed. No real files are changed by this example.

Your working notes

This worksheet does not send your writing to QMInventory, save it to an account, or store it in your browser. Notes are cleared when you leave or reload this page. Download a text copy if you want to keep them.

Copy a few filenames, including a boundary case. Do not include private folder roots.

State which absolute episode starts each season and where specials belong.

Write the expected result for each sample before testing.

List collision, ordering, playback, and source-retention checks.

What to do next

Use what you learned

  1. Compare the worksheet with QMInventory’s guide and inspectable rules.
  2. Run a desktop preview on a small sample and resolve every ambiguous mapping before applying it.
